Bulkheads & Structural Fabrication

What Are Bulkheads
and Why Do They Matter?

Bulkheads are vertical structural walls inside your boat that provide
strength, separate compartments, and support key components
like the deck, console, and engine. Damaged or rotten bulkheads can
lead to soft floors, loose consoles, and serious structural issues.
We replace and fabricate bulkheads using marine-grade materials
to ensure a strong, long-lasting repair.

Common Bulkhead Locations
  • Forward BulkheadSeparates the bow compartment and adds hull rigidity.
  • Midship BulkheadAdds strength and separates storage areas.
  • Console BulkheadSupports the center console and electronics.
  • Transom BulkheadProvides critical support for the engine and takes on major loads.

Rotten Wood Bulkheads

Water intrusion leads to soft, rotted, or failing bulkheads.

Water finds its way into plywood bulkheads through deck fittings, hatches and unsealed edges, and once the wood stays wet it rots. Dark, wet or crumbling wood inside a hatch is the usual giveaway. We cut the rotten panel out and build a new one from marine-grade plywood or a rot-proof composite core, laminated and tabbed to the hull.

Cracked or Delaminated

Stress, impact, or age can cause cracks and separation.

Cracks usually show up where the bulkhead meets the hull or deck, because that joint takes the load every time the boat flexes. Once the laminate separates, water can reach the core and the damage spreads. We grind back to sound glass, repair or replace the core as needed, then re-laminate and re-tab the joint for full strength.

Loose Center Console

A failing bulkhead can cause your console to move or flex.

If your console shifts when you grab it, or you see cracking and stains around its base, the structure underneath may have let go. We inspect the bulkhead and mounting area, remove the console if we need to, rebuild the support, and re-bed the console on solid new structure so it stays put.

Soft or Spongy Floors

Often a sign of damaged bulkheads or stringers.

When the floor gives underfoot, the bulkheads or stringers below have usually lost strength and the deck no longer has solid support. We find where the structure has failed, open up only as much of the floor as the repair needs, rebuild what’s underneath, then re-laminate and finish the deck so it feels firm again.

Transom Support Issues

Weak or damaged bulkheads can affect engine mounting and performance.

The transom bulkhead helps carry your engine’s weight and thrust, so when it rots or cracks you may notice the transom flexing, cracks near the engine, or the motor not sitting quite right. We cut out the weakened structure, build a new bulkhead, and tab and glass it in so engine loads are spread properly again.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my bulkheads are bad?

Common signs are a soft or spongy deck, a console or leaning post that moves when you push on it, cracks where the bulkhead meets the hull or deck, and dark, wet or crumbling wood inside a hatch. If you notice any of these, we can inspect the structure and tell you what we find.

What materials do you use for new bulkheads?

Marine-grade plywood or a rot-proof composite core, laminated with fiberglass and epoxy or vinylester resin, then tabbed to the hull. We’ll recommend the right core for your boat and how it’s used.

Can you replace bulkheads in a center console?

Yes. We often replace the bulkheads that support the console, removing it when we need to, then reinstall and re-bed it on the new structure so it’s solid again.

How long does a bulkhead repair take?

It depends on how much structure is involved. A single bulkhead is often a few days; replacing several, or bulkheads tied into stringers and the deck, can take a few weeks because the laminate needs time to cure. We’ll give you a timeline with your quote.

Will the repair be stronger than the original?

In most cases, yes. Many factory bulkheads are lightly glassed wood. Ours are built with marine-grade or composite cores and fully tabbed and sealed, so water can’t get in and start the rot again.

How much does it cost?

Pricing depends on how many bulkheads need work, how hard they are to reach, and whether the deck or console has to come up. Send us a few photos and we’ll give you a free, no-obligation quote.
