Understanding Bottom Damage

The Bottom Takes the Hardest Hits — and Hides Them Best.

Keel and bottom damage usually goes unseen until the boat is hauled. Worn-through gelcoat lets water into the laminate, and a hard grounding can crack the structure above the waterline without showing on the outside. We inspect the full bottom and the structure inside before we repair.

Keel Wear & Abrasion

Worn keels rebuilt with extra laminate where they take the most wear.

Beaching, sandbars and trailer rollers slowly grind through the gelcoat along the keel until bare glass is exposed and soaking up water. With the boat hauled and dry, we remove the worn and wet material back to solid laminate, build the keel back up, then fair and seal it in gelcoat or barrier coat, ready for bottom paint.

Strut & Through-Hull Areas

Cracking around struts, transducers and fittings reinforced.

Struts, transducers and through-hull fittings put load into a small area of the bottom, and vibration or a hard strike can crack the laminate around them and open a leak path into the boat. We remove hardware as needed, grind out the cracked glass, rebuild with added reinforcement, and re-bed and seal the fittings.

Keel Rebuild & Protection

Rebuilt keels with added wear protection for shallow water.

If you run the flats, beach often or launch from a trailer, the keel takes a beating every trip. After grinding back to sound glass, we build up extra layers of fiberglass along the keel, then fair and finish it so the added material takes the wear instead of the hull underneath.

Our Keel & Bottom Repair Process

Built Right. Step by Step.

  1. Haul & Inspect

We inspect the bottom and the structure inside for cracks, wet laminate and hidden damage.

  2. Grind to Sound Glass

Worn, cracked and wet material is removed and tapered back to solid laminate.

  3. Rebuild & Reinforce

New laminate is built up with extra layers where the keel takes the most wear.

  4. Fair, Barrier & Finish

Faired, sealed and finished in gelcoat or barrier coat ready for bottom paint.

Bottom Damage Shouldn’t Be Ignored

What You Can’t See Can Sink You.

Bottom damage sits underwater all season. Every day it stays open, water works into the laminate and the repair gets bigger.

  • Water AbsorptionExposed laminate soaks up water and gets heavier and weaker.
  • Structural StressKeels and bottoms carry the load of the whole hull when running.
  • DelaminationWet, flexing glass separates from the layers and structure around it.
  • LeaksCracks at the keel and fittings can let water into the boat.

What Does Keel & Bottom Repair Involve?

Bottom repairs start with the boat out of the water and dry. We remove worn, cracked and wet material back to sound laminate, rebuild with marine-grade fabric and resin — adding extra layers along the keel where it wears — and fair the bottom smooth. The finish is gelcoat or an epoxy barrier coat, ready for bottom paint.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got Questions?
We’ve Got Answers.

Can you repair a worn-through keel?

Yes. We grind back to sound laminate and rebuild the keel with extra layers of fiberglass, then fair and seal it.

Do you need to haul the boat?

Yes — bottom repairs need the hull out of the water and dry. We can haul at our Largo yard.

Can you add keel protection?

Yes. We can build extra laminate along the keel and finish it for boats that run shallow or beach often.

Will you repaint the bottom?

We finish in gelcoat or barrier coat and can prep for bottom paint. Ask about bottom paint when you request a quote.

What if I hit something hard?

Have it checked inside and out. A hard grounding can crack stringers and bulkheads even when the outside looks fine.

How long does keel and bottom repair take?

Smaller repairs take a few days plus cure time. Larger rebuilds depend on how wet the laminate is — we give you a timeline with the quote.
