Understanding Structural Rebuilds

Some Hulls Need More Than a Repair — They Need a Rebuild.

Years of water intrusion, a major impact or past repairs that failed can leave large areas of a hull and its internal structure compromised. A structural rebuild removes everything that’s damaged and rebuilds the hull skin, stringers, bulkheads and bottom as one bonded structure — often stronger than the original.

Hull Section Rebuilds

Large damaged areas cut out and rebuilt to full thickness.

When water intrusion, a major impact or failed past repairs have compromised a large area, spot repairs just move the problem around. We survey the hull to find where sound material starts, cut out everything wet, rotted or broken, and rebuild the section with new core and laminate bonded to the surrounding hull, then fair and gelcoat it.

Structural Re-Lamination

New structural glass laid up to original or better spec.

Once the damaged material is gone, the strength comes back in the layup. We grind the edges back to a wide taper, then build up new fiberglass layer by layer with the right resin system for the job, bonding and tabbing it to the stringers and bulkheads so the hull works as one structure again.

Our Structural Rebuild Process

Built Right. Step by Step.

  1. Survey the Structure

We inspect the hull, stringers, bulkheads and core to plan the full scope.

  2. Strip to Sound Material

Everything wet, rotted or broken is cut out and ground back to solid glass.

  3. Rebuild the Structure

New core, stringers, bulkheads and laminate are bonded in as one structure.

  4. Fair, Gelcoat & Finish

The hull is faired, gelcoated and finished ready to go back in the water.

Structural Damage Shouldn’t Wait

Weak Structure Puts Everyone at Risk.

A hull that flexes, cracks or leaks at its structure is past cosmetic work. Rebuilding it properly is the only way to make it safe again.

  • Safety at SeaA compromised hull can fail under load in rough water.
  • Spreading RotWet core and stringers rot outward into sound material.
  • Cracks & LeaksA flexing structure cracks the hull and opens leak paths.
  • Resale ValueA documented rebuild restores value a failing hull has lost.

What Does a Structural Hull Rebuild Involve?

A structural rebuild starts with a full survey of the hull and everything bonded to it. We strip out all wet, rotted and broken material, then rebuild the core, stringers, bulkheads and hull laminate with marine-grade materials and the right resin system for the job. Every new part is bonded and tabbed into the hull as one structure, then faired and finished.

  • Full structural survey and moisture testing
  • Removal of rotted core, stringers and bulkheads
  • Stringer and grid replacement
  • Bulkhead rebuilds and tabbing
  • Structural re-lamination of the hull skin
  • Fairing, gelcoat and finish work

Frequently Asked Questions

Got Questions?
We’ve Got Answers.

Is a hull rebuild worth it?

For a boat with a good engine and a hull you want to keep, a structural rebuild usually costs far less than a comparable replacement boat. We’ll give you an honest assessment.

Will the hull be stronger than before?

Often, yes. Modern core and resin systems don’t rot, and we build to original spec or better.

Do you replace stringers and bulkheads too?

Yes. Stringers, bulkheads and core are part of most rebuilds and are bonded in as one structure.

Will the finish be color matched?

Yes. Repaired areas are faired, gelcoated to your hull color and polished.

Where is the work done?

Structural rebuilds are done at our Largo yard, where the boat can be stripped, dried and rebuilt properly.

How long does a structural rebuild take?

It depends on the scope — from a few weeks for a section to longer for a full grid and bottom. We give you a schedule with the quote.
