Understanding Moderate Gelcoat Chips

More Than a Surface Chip —
We Repair It the Right Way.

Moderate gelcoat chips are larger than surface nicks and often expose the fiberglass laminate beneath the gelcoat. If left unrepaired, water can penetrate the laminate, leading to oxidation, delamination, and more expensive repairs. We rebuild the damaged area with marine-grade materials and match the exact color for a smooth, durable, like-new finish.

Larger Gelcoat Chips

Chips bigger than a dime with exposed fiberglass laminate or multiple layers.

Once a chip breaks through the gelcoat, the fiberglass underneath is open to water, and left alone it can lead to oxidation and delamination. We check the laminate for damage, rebuild the chip slightly proud with marine-grade materials, sand it flush with the surrounding surface, and finish with gelcoat tinted to your boat as it looks today.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a moderate gelcoat chip repair cost?

It depends on the size and depth of the chip, whether the laminate underneath is damaged, where it is on the boat and how hard the color is to match. Send us a photo or book an inspection and we’ll give you a firm quote before any work starts.

Will the repair be visible?

The goal is that it isn’t. We build the chip back up slightly proud, sand it flush with the surrounding surface, then wet sand and polish until the gloss and texture match, so the edge of the repair disappears.

Can you match my boat’s existing gelcoat color?

Yes. We tint the gelcoat to your boat as it is today, not to the factory color code, because sun and age shift the original shade. We test the match on the hull before we apply it.

How long does a gelcoat chip repair take?

Most moderate chip repairs take one to two days, mostly for cure time between filling, gelcoating and finishing. If the laminate needs repair first or there are several chips, we give you a timeline with the quote.

Can you repair chips below the waterline?

Yes. The exposed laminate has to be dried out and sealed before the chip is filled, so these repairs are usually done with the boat hauled out. We’ll inspect it and recommend the right approach.
