Why Deep Gouges Should Be Repaired

More Than Cosmetic Damage.

Deep gouges can compromise the fiberglass laminate, allowing water to enter and cause serious structural damage over time. Even if it looks like a surface issue, it’s important to have it inspected and repaired correctly to prevent costly problems later.

  • Water Intrusion Exposed fiberglass can absorb water, leading to delamination and structural failure.
  • Structural Weakening Gouges remove fiberglass layers, reducing the strength of your hull or deck.
  • More Expensive Later Small gouges can quickly turn into major repairs if water intrusion is left untreated.
  • Reduced Value Visible gouges and poor repairs can lower your boat’s appearance and resale value.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a deep gouge repair cost?

It depends on the size and depth of the gouge, where it is on the boat, and whether the laminate underneath is damaged. We inspect the area and give you a free, written quote before any work starts.

How do you know if a gouge is structural?

If the gouge has gone through the gelcoat into the fiberglass, flexes when pressed, feels soft around the edges or shows wet, discolored laminate, it needs a structural repair. We sound and inspect the area to be sure.

Can you match my boat’s exact gelcoat color?

Yes. We tint the gelcoat to your hull, allowing for fading and age, then wet sand and polish the repair so it blends into the surrounding finish.

How long does a deep gouge repair take?

Most deep gouge repairs take a few days, because each layer of fiberglass, filler and gelcoat needs to cure. Larger or structural repairs take longer — we give you a timeline with the quote.

Can you repair deep gouges at my dock?

Many can. Our mobile service handles most gouge repairs at your dock or lift. Larger structural repairs are best done at our Largo yard, where the area can cure properly.
