Understanding Soft Spots

A Soft Spot Is a Symptom — We Find and Fix the Cause.

When a hull flexes underfoot or sounds dull when tapped, the laminate has usually separated from the core, or the core itself has taken on water. We moisture-test and sound the whole area to map exactly where the damage runs, then repair it from solid material to solid material.

Soft Spots

Areas that flex or feel spongy, opened up and rebuilt solid.

A soft spot is a symptom, usually of water getting into the core through a fitting, crack or old repair, or of the skin letting go after an impact or years of flexing. We moisture-test and sound the area to map how far it runs, then remove the bad core and re-laminate from solid material to solid material.

Laminate Delamination

Separated fiberglass layers removed and re-laminated.

Delamination is when layers of fiberglass separate from each other, so the hull no longer works as a single skin. It often sounds dull when tapped and can show up as cracking or bulging in the gelcoat. We cut away the separated layers back to a sound bond, lay up new structural glass, then fair and gelcoat to match.

Wet & Rotted Core

Saturated balsa or plywood core cut out and replaced.

Once water reaches a balsa or plywood core, it wicks outward every season and the wood starts to rot, losing its grip on fasteners and fittings. Injecting resin over wet core only traps the moisture, so we open one skin, remove all wet material back to dry edges, bond in new marine-grade core and re-laminate.

Skin-to-Core Separation

Skins re-bonded to a new, dry core for full stiffness.

Sometimes the core is still intact but the fiberglass skin has let go of it, often after an impact, an old repair or years of flexing, and the panel loses its stiffness. Small, dry separations can sometimes be injected and locally re-bonded. Larger or wet areas are opened up, the core replaced, and the skin re-laminated to it.

Moisture Mapping

Meter testing and sounding to find the true edge of the damage.

The spot you can feel is rarely the whole problem, because water spreads through the core well beyond it. Before any cutting, we take moisture meter readings and tap the area with a hammer: dry, bonded laminate rings, while wet or separated laminate sounds dull. That map shows the true size of the repair before you commit to it.

Our Soft Spot Repair Process

Built Right. Step by Step.

  1. Test & Map the Area

Moisture metering and sounding show where the laminate is wet or separated.

  2. Open & Remove Bad Core

One skin is cut back and the wet or rotted core removed to dry, solid edges.

  3. New Core & Laminate

New marine core is bedded and the skin re-laminated with structural glass.

  4. Fair, Gelcoat & Finish

Faired and gelcoated to match, for a solid hull that looks untouched.

Soft Spots Don’t Stay Small

Soft Today Means Rotten Tomorrow.

Water in a core keeps spreading, especially in Florida heat. Catching a soft spot early keeps the repair small and the price down.

  • Spreading MoistureWater wicks through the core, growing the wet area every season.
  • Loss of StiffnessA separated skin no longer carries load, so the hull flexes.
  • Core RotWet wood core rots and can no longer hold fasteners or fittings.
  • Cracking & FailureConstant flex cracks the laminate and gelcoat above the soft area.

What Does Soft Spot Repair Involve?

We start by mapping moisture and separation across the whole area, not just the spot you can feel. One skin is opened, all wet or rotted core is removed back to dry, solid material, and new marine-grade core is bonded in. The skin is re-laminated with structural fiberglass, then faired, gelcoated and polished.

  • Moisture testing and sounding of the full area
  • Removal of wet, rotted or separated core
  • New marine-grade core bonded in place
  • Structural re-lamination of the hull skin
  • Repair of failed bonds to stringers and bulkheads
  • Fairing, gelcoat and color matching

Surface Flex or Core Failure — What’s Going On?

Minor Separation

  • Small, dry area of skin separation
  • No moisture on the meter
  • Firm edges all around
  • Often from a single impact or old repair
  • Can be injected or locally re-bonded

Core Failure

  • Spongy area that is growing
  • High moisture readings
  • Dull sound over a wide area
  • Cracking or weeping in the gelcoat above
  • Needs core removal and re-lamination

Frequently Asked Questions

Got Questions?
We’ve Got Answers.

What causes soft spots in a fiberglass hull?

Most soft spots come from water getting into the core through fittings, cracks or old repairs, or from the skin separating from the core after impact or years of flexing.

How do you find the edge of a soft spot?

We use a moisture meter and sound the area with a hammer. Dry, bonded laminate rings; wet or separated laminate sounds dull.

Can soft spots be injected instead of cut out?

Small, dry separations sometimes can. Wet or rotted core has to be removed — injecting resin over it traps the moisture.

Will the repair be color matched?

Yes. After re-lamination the area is faired, gelcoated to your color and polished.

Can you repair soft spots at my dock?

Small, above-waterline areas sometimes can. Most core repairs are done at our Largo yard so the laminate can dry and cure properly.

How long does soft spot repair take?

It depends on the size of the wet area and drying time. We give you a timeline once the area is mapped.
