Collision Damage Repair

What is Collision Damage
and How Do We Repair It?

Collision damage happens when a boat strikes another vessel,
dock, piling, or underwater object. These impacts can crack,
shatter, or delaminate the fiberglass, and may also damage
internal structures like stringers or bulkheads. We repair
collision damage using marine-grade materials and proven
methods to restore your boat’s strength, safety, and appearance.

Common Collision Damage Examples
Boat bow with its fiberglass split open by an impact

Bow Impacts

Damage from collisions with
other boats, docks, or fixed
objects.

The bow takes the first hit in most collisions, and the force often travels past the visible break into the stem, the deck joint and the bulkheads behind it. We sound out how far the damage runs, cut back to sound fiberglass, rebuild the laminate and the bow’s original shape, then fair, gelcoat and color-match it.

Hull side holed and cracked by a side impact

Side Hull Damage

Scratches, cracks, and
broken fiberglass from
side impacts.

A side impact can look like a scrape on the outside while the laminate behind it is cracked or pulled away from its core. We check the inside of the hull as well as the outside, grind back past the damage, rebuild the fiberglass to full thickness, and fair and color-match the gelcoat so the hull side reads as one smooth surface again.

Dock & Piling Collisions

Cracks and structural
damage from hitting docks
or pilings.

A piling concentrates the hit on a small area, so the gelcoat can craze in rings while the glass underneath fractures. Docking hits often land on the hull-to-deck joint or rub rail as well. We find the full extent of the cracking, rebuild the laminate and the joint where needed, then finish and color-match the repair.

Transom broken open near the engine mounts

Transom Damage

Impact damage near the
engine or swim platform.

The transom carries your engine, so an impact there is never just cosmetic. A hit near the engine mounts or swim platform can crack the skins and let water reach the core. We inspect the core and the engine mounting area, rebuild the laminate, replace wet or crushed core if we find it, and finish to match.

Underwater Impacts

Damage from submerged
objects like rocks, debris,
or sandbars.

Rocks, debris and sandbars usually hit the keel and bottom first, and the damage can reach struts, through-hulls and the stringers above them. With the boat hauled and dry, we grind out the damaged glass, rebuild with marine-grade laminate, check the structure inside, then fair and seal the bottom so it’s ready for paint.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does collision damage repair take?

Smaller impact repairs take a few days. Larger structural rebuilds depend on the damage and on cure times between layers and gelcoat. We’ll give you a timeline with your quote.

Will my boat look the same after the repair?

That’s the goal. We rebuild the laminate, fair the area back to the hull’s original shape, then gelcoat, wet sand and polish it so the repair blends in with the rest of the boat.

Do you repair structural damage?

Yes. If an impact has cracked a stringer, bulkhead or transom, or let water into the core, we cut back to sound material and rebuild the structure before any cosmetic work.

Can you match my boat’s gelcoat color?

Yes. We tint the gelcoat to your hull’s current color, allowing for fading, and blend it in, then wet sand and polish the repair.

Does insurance cover collision damage?

Often, yes, depending on your policy. We can document the damage and provide a detailed repair estimate for your insurer.

How much does collision repair cost?

It depends on the size of the damage, whether the core or structure is involved, and the finish. Send us photos or give us a call, and we’ll give you a free quote.
