Frequently Asked Questions

What causes waterline stains?

A mix of algae and biofilm, minerals from the water, and pollutants like fuel residue and dirt. They collect where the hull meets the water and bond to the gelcoat over time, which is why the stain line follows your waterline.

Can all waterline stains be removed?

Most can. Scum, algae and mineral staining usually come out completely. Stains that have soaked deep into old, porous gelcoat can sometimes only be lightened, and we’ll tell you that up front after we’ve looked at the boat.

Will this damage my gelcoat?

No. We start with the gentlest method that works, and we only wet sand or compound as much as the stain needs, so we take off as little gelcoat as possible. The finish is then polished back to a gloss.

How long does waterline stain removal take?

It depends on the size of the boat and how heavy the staining is. Light staining is often a single visit, while years of buildup takes longer. We’ll give you a timeline with your free quote.

Do you wax the boat after removing the stains?

Yes. We finish with a high-gloss polish and can add wax or a ceramic coating for longer protection, which also makes the next round of waterline buildup easier to clean off.
