Understanding Trailer Bunk Damage

What is Trailer Bunk Damage?

Trailer bunks are padded supports that hold your boat during trailering. Over time, contact with the bunks can cause scratches, scuffs, and deeper gouges in the gelcoat and fiberglass — especially during loading, unloading, or long-distance travel. These marks are common, but if left unrepaired they can allow water intrusion, lead to oxidation, and reduce the value and appearance of your boat.

  • Deeper GougesDamage from repeated contact or improper loading.
  • Fiberglass ExposureGelcoat wear can expose fiberglass, leading to water intrusion if not repaired.
  • Wide Contact AreasLong bunk contact can create wider scuffs and wear lines.

Straight Bunk Scratches

Long, straight scratches from carpeted or plastic bunks.

These lines follow the bunks exactly, usually from sand and grit trapped in worn carpet, or a plastic bunk dragging as the boat slides on and off. Most stay in the gelcoat, so we wet sand the run, fill any deeper spots, then compound and polish it so it blends back into the hull.

Deep Bunk Gouges

Deeper damage caused by improper loading or worn bunks.

When bunk carpet wears through to the board or a bracket, or the boat comes on crooked, the hull can gouge right through the gelcoat into the fiberglass. We grind out the damage and any loose glass, rebuild with marine-grade laminate and filler, then gelcoat, color-match and polish. We’ll also flag worn or misadjusted bunks.

Widespread Scuffing

Repeated trailering can leave multiple scuffs across the hull.

Every launch and retrieve adds a few more marks, and over a season or two the lower hull can look dull and scuffed over a wide area. We find which marks go deeper than the gelcoat and repair those first, then sand, color-match where needed, and compound and polish the whole area to an even finish.

Waterline Bunk Wear

Bunk contact near the waterline can cause significant gelcoat wear.

Gelcoat worn thin near the waterline goes back in the water every time you launch, so any exposed fiberglass there can start soaking up moisture. The boat needs to be out of the water with the area reachable. We rebuild the worn gelcoat, color-match it to your hull as it looks today, then polish and protect it for future trailering.

Edge & Corner Damage

Contact during loading can damage edges and corners.

Chines, strakes and transom corners can catch a guide post, roller or the trailer frame when the boat comes on at an angle, chipping or cracking the gelcoat right on the edge. We remove loose material, rebuild the edge to its original shape, then color-match and polish it so the line of the hull looks crisp again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you repair trailer bunk damage at my dock?

Often, yes — our mobile service comes to your dock, driveway or storage yard. Bunk damage sits low on the hull, so the boat needs to be out of the water with the damaged area reachable. Send us a few photos and we’ll tell you what setup works, or we can do the repair at our yard in Largo.

Will the repair be color matched?

Yes. We tint the gelcoat to your hull as it looks today, including any fading, then blend and polish the repair so it disappears into the surrounding finish.

How long does a trailer bunk repair take?

Light scratches and scuffs are often finished in a day. Deeper gouges that need the fiberglass rebuilt take longer to allow for cure time — we give you a timeline with the quote.

Can you repair deep gouges from trailer bunks?

Yes. We grind out the damaged gelcoat and any loose fiberglass, rebuild the area with marine-grade laminate and filler, then gelcoat, color match and polish it. We’ll also point out worn bunk carpet or misadjusted bunks, so the damage doesn’t come straight back.
