Common Multiple Chip & Pitting Repairs

Widespread Pitting

Multiple small chips and pits across large surface areas.

Years of spray, debris and everyday knocks can leave dozens of small pits across a hull side or deck, each one a spot where water and UV can reach the laminate. Instead of chasing them one by one, we fill each pit slightly proud, sand the whole area flush, then color-match, wet sand and polish it as one surface.

Transom Pitting

Common on older boats from sun exposure and saltwater.

The transom takes sun all day, spray off the wake and constant salt, so its gelcoat often turns chalky and pitted before the rest of the boat. We fill the pits and any chips around fittings and molded edges with marine-grade gelcoat, sand it smooth, match the color and polish the transom back to an even gloss.

Hull Side Pitting

Heavy oxidation with multiple chips and pinholes in the gelcoat.

Pinholes are tiny pits in the gelcoat that often stay hidden until oxidation dulls the surface around them, and then they show up across the whole side. We clean up the oxidized surface to see how far the pitting really goes, fill the pinholes and chips, sand and blend the area, then color-match and polish so it looks uniform again.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does multiple chip and pitting repair cost?

It depends on how large the affected area is, how deep the pits go, where they are on the boat and how hard the color is to match. A few scattered chips cost far less than refinishing a whole hull side. Send us photos or book an inspection and we’ll give you a firm quote before any work starts.

Will the repairs be visible?

The goal is that they aren’t. We fill each chip and pit slightly proud, sand the whole area flush, then wet sand and polish until the gloss and texture match, so the repaired area reads as one even surface.

How long does a multiple chip repair take?

A small area is often done in one to two days, mostly for cure time between filling and finishing. Widespread pitting across a hull side or transom takes longer; we give you a timeline with the quote.

Can you match my boat’s existing gelcoat color?

Yes. We tint the gelcoat to your boat as it is today, not to the factory color code, because sun and age shift the original shade. We test the match on the hull before we apply it.

Can multiple chips and pitting lead to bigger problems?

They can. Every pit that reaches the laminate lets water and UV in, which leads to oxidation, staining and eventually blistering or delamination. Filling and sealing them early is far cheaper than repairing the laminate later.
